Facing the sea on Avenida Delfim Moreira in Rio de Janeiro, this 360 m² apartment preserves its existing architectural configuration, with the intervention focused on the interiors. Cabinetry, furniture, lighting, color and artwork create a new identity for the spaces while establishing different relationships with the landscape.

In the social area, large modular natural wood panels were installed away from the walls, creating a second layer over the existing architecture. They support artwork, photographs and objects, as well as the long suspended sideboard in the dining room. The composition follows the generous scale of the rooms and, together with the openings, frames the landscape and the presence of the sea.

The furniture selection brings together Brazilian design pieces and elements already belonging to the residents. Two Mole armchairs by Sergio Rodrigues were upholstered in light blue linen, while a pair of triangular natural-leather armchairs with suspended seats occupies the area beside the glazed façade. The lightness of these pieces evokes hammocks and creates a place to linger beside the view of the sea.

A large natural-fiber rug defines the living area and establishes a common foundation for the different furniture  groupings. Floor and table lamps complement the general lighting and allow softer lighting conditions to be created at  different points throughout the social area.

Without significant changes to the existing configuration, the project transforms the apartment through the layering of new elements and the relationships between furniture, art, cabinetry and landscape. The result establishes a distinct identity for the interiors while keeping the sea as a constant presence in the living spaces.
